In Mathematics we use the programmes of study for key stages 1 and 2 for the National Curriculum in England. For a complete overview please click HERE to open a new window with the whole document from the Department for Education.
We use Primary Advantage Maths as our medium term plan – please see below. Where relevant we also teach maths through the IPC units.
Over the course of key stages 1 and 2 children will be given the opportunity to develop to the full, their abilities in:
Ratio and Proportion
The lead staff member for Maths is Mrs Cole who is supported by Mrs Brown.
Primary Advantage Maths
Here at Great Heath Academy we follow the Primary Advantage Maths Programme. The Primary Advantage Maths Ambassadors are Mrs Cole and Mrs Brown. This programme develops children’s understanding of mathematical concepts using concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches.
Children will use a range of resources to develop their conceptual understanding of the procedures they use.
Here are a few examples
Each day children will spend a short amount of time counting forwards and backwards in a range of different multiples. This helps to develop children’s mental skills and helps them to understand their times tables.
Learning at home
The PA programme provides each year group with a set of ‘Learn its’ that identify the addition and multiplication facts children should know by heart by the end of each term.
Click the year group to find the ‘Learn its’ for your child. You might also like to take a look at the ‘Learn its’ for other year groups.

Third Space Learning
Third Space Learning is an online tutoring service that we have subscribed to. Some of our year 6 children are receiving weekly tuition – aren’t they lucky!
This is what some of our pupils have said about Third Space Learning:
“That I got to learn something new!!!!!!!!”
“It was very lovely and useful”
“I liked learning about negative numbers and it was AMAZING!!!!!!!”
We have now purchased an online teaching and learning resource for children in years 1 to 6. It is intended for children to use indepedently as it will track their progress and move them on through a range of activities. It is therefore important that you don’t help children to complete the activities. If children find the activities difficult it will give them guidance and support.
By now all children in years 1-6 should have their login details. If this is not the case, please speak to your child’s class teacher or alternatively see Mrs Cole.
Certificates for RM Easimaths
When children reach the end of each level, they will be awarded with a certficate which they can print out. Children may then bring this certificate to Mrs Cole to collect another certificate and a sticker during golden time, as a reward for their hard work on RM Easimaths.
